Born sgeir Trausti Einarsson in the diminutive hamlet of Laugarbakki, Icelandic singer/songwriter sgeir specializes in intimate, soulful songs that span indie electronic and atmospheric folk. An overnight success in his native Iceland, where the then 21-year-old released his 2012 debut album, Dr Dauagn, and quickly broke every regional record in the book (it’s estimated that almost ten percent of the Icelandic population owns the album), sgeir’s unique songs are made all the more idiosyncratic by the fact that his 72-year-old father, poet Einar Georg Einarsson, provides the majority of the lyrics. In 2013, with the help of Iceland-based American singer/songwriter John Grant, who helped to translate the lyrics, Asgeir released an English version of Dr Dauagn (In the Silence) on the One Little Indian label. It charted in several other countries, including the U.K. and Australia. While that album featured a mix of acoustic guitar and wistful electronic tracks, the follow-up, 2017’s Afterglow, took on bolder, more experimental electronic textures. ~ James Christopher Monger

The psychedelic alternative quartet the Dandy Warhols formed in Portland, Oregon in 1994. Initially, the band invited comparisons to influences the Velvet Underground and Ride, but their cool, detached demeanors and knack for melody also provided America with an answer to Brit-pop. The Dandy Warhols were founded by Courtney Taylor (vocals, guitar), Zia McCabe (keyboards), Peter Holmstrom (guitar), and Eric Hedford (drums), who signed on with the independent label Tim/Kerr shortly after their formation. In 1995, the Dandies released their debut, Dandy’s Rule OK?, and while other rock bands may be a bit hesitant to spell out their influences, the Dandy Warhols decided to openly advertise it, as the album contained such song titles as “Lou Weed” and “Ride.”
The Dandy Warhols Come Down Capitol signed the group the same year, but the Dandys’ new label rejected a second album they submitted (claiming it didn’t have any “hits”). Disappointed but undeterred, the group reunited once more with the producer of their debut album, Tony Lash, and came up with Dandy Warhols Come Down, issued in 1997. While the album didn’t exactly establish the group as a household name, it did prove to be an underground fave, especially in Europe, where the group became the toast of the critics and enjoyed more substantial commercial success. The single “Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth” received modest attention, for which a promo video was filmed by renowned celebrity photographer David LaChapelle. As the band’s popularity began to increase, Hedford left the band to take up DJing in Portland, and Taylor’s cousin Brent DeBoer stepped in to play drums. In 2000, the band issued its third full-length, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia. “Bohemian Like You” was a hit in the UK and on American college radio, going on to become one of their most iconic songs. Two summers later, founding member Peter Holmstrom married his longtime girlfriend and took her maiden name of Loew. Taylor also got a name change when he opted to go by Courtney Taylor-Taylor after an interviewer misinterpreted the pronunciation.
Welcome to the Monkey House Within months, Taylor-Taylor, Loew, McCabe, and DeBoer were back in the studio for a fourth album. Welcome to the Monkey House (2003), a tribute to Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.’s book of short stories, featured collaborations with Nile Rodgers, Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes, and Evan Dando. The Dandy Warhols were also personally asked by David Bowie to be the opening act for his fall 2003 A Reality tour. That album spawned another hit for the band, the synth-disco jam, “We Used To Be Friends.” Though the band was relatively quiet during 2004, they remained prominent thanks to the fascinating documentary Dig!, which chronicled the love-hate relationship between the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. The group returned with new music in 2005, when the uneven Odditorium or Warlords of Mars arrived that fall. Three years later, the Dandy Warhols released their sixth album, the return-to-form Earth to the Dandy Warhols, in both digital and physical formats on their own Beat the World label; the album also featured collaborations with Mark Knopfler and the Heartbreakers’ Mike Campbell. In 2009, the band decided to release a reworking of Monkey House titled The Dandy Warhols Are Sound, which, according to the band, presented their original vision of the 2003 album. 2010 saw big changes for the group, as they split with Capitol Records and released a greatest-hits from that era, which included a new track, “This Is the Tide,” the first Dandy’s song featuring DeBoer on vocals. The Dandies continued their maturation in sound with their ninth album, 2012’s This Machine. In 2013, the band rang in the 13th anniversary of their break-out third album, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia, by reissuing a deluxe version of the LP and heading out on the road to perform the album live. The tour resulted in the band’s first-ever live album, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia Live at the Wonder. A second live recording, Live at the X-Ray Cafe, was released by Voodoo Doughnut for Record Store Day in 2016. The EP captured their eighth gig ever from 1994. That same year, their growth continued on their ninth studio album, the patient and pastoral Distortland.

Few bands in the early 2000s rose so quickly to the forefront of pop music as the Killers. With a mix of ’80s-styled synth pop and fashionista charm, the band’s street-smart debut, Hot Fuss, became one of 2004’s biggest releases, spawning four singles and catapulting the group — particularly their dandyish, 22-year-old frontman, Brandon Flowers — into the international spotlight. Hot Fuss reveled in the garish glitz of the band’s native Las Vegas, spinning tales of androgynous girlfriends and illicit affairs to a public whose taste for revivalist dance-rock would prove to be virtually insatiable. Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, and the Bravery all benefited from such retro-minded interest, but the Killers unapologetically trumped them all — even when their sophomore effort, Sam’s Town, deemphasized the group’s new wave sensibilities in favor of something more akin to the heartland rock of Bruce Springsteen and Rattle and Hum-era U2. Brandon Flowers (vocals/keyboards), David Keuning (guitar), Mark Stoermer (bass), and Ronnie Vannucci (drums) first came together in 2002, two years before Hot Fuss introduced their band to the public. Flowers had been sacked by his former synth pop band, Blush Response, after refusing to move to Los Angeles with the rest of his bandmates. Instead, he remained in Las Vegas, where he soon met local guitarist and Oasis fanatic Keuning. The two began collaborating on material; within weeks, they’d composed their soon-to-be radio hit “Mr. Brightside.” Stoermer, a former medical courier, and Vannucci, a classical percussion major at UNLV, eventually joined the fray, and the band began playing small clubs in its hometown. A U.K. representative for Warner Bros. caught wind of the Killers’ brewing hype, and although he neglected to bring them on board the Warner roster, he did pass along their demo to the London-based indie imprint Lizard King. The British label quickly signed the Killers, who temporarily moved to the U.K. and issued a limited-edition single for “Mr. Brightside.” The Killers’ buzz had effectively traveled back across the Atlantic by fall 2003, and the band was offered a prime spot at the annual CMJ Music Marathon in New York City. A worldwide deal with Island followed shortly thereafter, positioning the Killers to join the ranks of Interpol, the Rapture, and the Strokes. Shared U.K. dates with British Sea Power and stellastarr* in 2004 gave the Killers an opportunity to showcase material from their debut album, Hot Fuss, which was released that June. “Somebody Told Me,” “Mr. Brightside,” “Smile Like You Mean It,” and “All These Things That I’ve Done” all became worldwide chart hits, and Hot Fuss peaked at number seven on the Billboard Top 200. Buoyed by such success, Flowers became a sought-after media presence, often lashing out at such groups as the Bravery for riding his band’s coattails into the mainstream. The frontman’s confidence was not unwarranted; by 2006, Hot Fuss had earned five Grammy nominations and sold over five million copies. Rather than take a break to recover from their heavy tour regime, the Killers immediately set to work on a second album. A newly built facility at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas became the band’s studio, and legendary producers Flood and Alan Moulder (who had previously worked together with U2 and the Smashing Pumpkins) were chosen to helm the controls. Instead of mining the glamour and glitz of their hometown (as they did to a successful extent on Hot Fuss), the group instead focused on nostalgia and the demise of old-fashioned American values, citing veteran songsmith Bruce Springsteen as a chief influence. The popularity generated by leadoff single “When You Were Young” led up to the highly anticipated release of Sam’s Town in early October 2006. While the album did not match the popularity of the band’s debut, it nevertheless sold 700,000 copies worldwide during its first week, eventually spawning three U.S. singles and gaining the Killers two additional Grammy nods. Sawdust, a collection of B-sides, rarities, and remixes, followed one year later, serving as a stopgap recording between the band’s proper studio albums. The Killers then returned in 2008 with Day & Age, which eschewed the Americana tangents of Sam’s Town in favor of pop pastiches and sleek, oddball dance-rock. The band’s return to the dancefloor was emboldened by Stuart Price, a veteran producer who had previously worked with Madonna and Gwen Stefani, and the Top 40 single “Human” helped the Killers continue their commercial streak. A lengthy tour carried the band into 2009, which also saw the release of the concert album Live from the Royal Albert Hall. Solo work comprised many of the next few years, including Brandon Flowers’ Flamingo, Ronnie Vannucci’s Big Talk, and Mark Stoermer’s Another Life. After reconvening in early 2011, the band got to work on its fourth studio album, enlisting a small army of notable producers, including Daniel Lanois, Steve Lillywhite, Damian Taylor, Stuart Price, and Brendan O’Brien. The resulting Battle Born was released in September, 2012. In early 2013, the band announced that they would be releasing their first greatest-hits collection later that year. Entitled Direct Hits, the November release featured two newly recorded songs, “Shot at Night” and “Just Another Girl,” which were produced by M83 and Stuart Price, respectively. ~ Andrew Leahey

Sunshine & The Rain is a duo consisting of ahusband and wife Ashley Morey (vocals, bass) and Justin Morey (guitar), both formerly of critically acclaimed psych rockers The Black Hollies. Formed around the same time as the 2014 dissolution of their former band, S&TR kicked things off with the Jesus & Mary Chain vibes of their debut 7” ”Can’t Stop Thinking About You” b/w ”Pale Blue Skies” in late 2015. In early 2016 they headed into Sonic Youth’s Echo Canyon West studio with the legendary Jon Spencer to begin work on their debut LP. Eschewing some of the more lengthy psych leanings of their earliest days, Spencer coaxed the bands towards a more immediate sound, cutting down track lengths and leaving nothing but pointed pop gems with sugary hooks and a dirty Ramones grit cutting throughout. Alongside direction from Spencer, and engineering from Grammy Award-winning engineer Ted Young, Sunsine & The Rain spent the majority of 2016 fine turning the songs that ended up on ”In The Darkness Of My Night.” From The instant gratification of singles like ”Let’s Go” and ”I’m Not Your Girl” to aggressive earworms ”Take Me Out Again” and an unexpected cover of Fugazi’s ”Merchandise,”this is a statement of a debut record that never strays from its point.

The title of 21-year-old Hannah Rodgers’ first album may seem like an attempt to capitalise on the zeitgeist but, satisfyingly, is actually taken from a 1947 Auden poem about industrialisation. There’s plenty more pleasingly cliche-defying action from Pixx here — who looks like a hip south London art school student but actually went to the Brit school, and who makes ethereal electro but performs it as if she might nut you at any moment. Perhaps the most obvious touchstone for Rodgers’ crisp and airy pop is British electronica of the late 90s, with the new-agey lyrics and otherworldly sonic motifs bringing to mind Zero 7, Dubstar, Morcheeba, and, occasionally, Lemon Jelly jolliness. Yet by flitting between a low, clear vocal, and something more urgent and old-fashionedly English, which evokes both 1960s pop and Tudor carols, Rodgers manages to dodge straightforward comparisons. It makes for a riveting and refreshing debut, which balances weirdness with sweet and soothing electropop joy.
